Museum registration describes a voluntary process of quality assurance for museums in Germany . The museum registers (from lat . Regesta ; from regerere : Enter), the list of museums that have successfully completed the registration process.

Due to the cultural sovereignty of the states, there is no uniform museum registration such as B. in the Netherlands (museum registration) or Austria ( museum quality seal ).

Museum registration has been introduced in individual federal states, the respective procedures vary, and the sponsors are the museum associations.

Museum registration in Rhineland-Palatinate

In 2004 the Museum Association of Rhineland-Palatinate developed a voluntary registration system based on a minimum standard scheme, which aims to measure the museum's performance in accordance with recognized professional standards . It is not the scope of the museum's work that is assessed, but rather whether a museum meets appropriate quality standards according to its type, structure and location .

Museum registration in Lower Saxony and Bremen

From July 2006 to August 2007, a pilot project with 33 museums was carried out under the sponsorship of the Museum Association for Lower Saxony and Bremen eV as a professional association. As a result, 21 museums were registered for seven years.

Since 2008, the museum association has been putting museum registration out to tender at its annual conference in March. The starting point is the standards for museums (published by the Deutscher Museumsbund and ICOM Germany ) and the museum definition from the International Council of Museums . From this, a catalog of questions and detailed, verifiable criteria were derived, on the basis of which the museums evaluate themselves . Museums of all types and sizes can take part in the registration process. The process begins in October and lasts 13 months. It is accompanied by advice and training. An independent committee made up of seven members decides on admission to the museum register.

In the first four years, 50 museums were registered for seven years each, and museums were "provisionally registered" 26 times for three years.
