from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Museum Association of Rhineland-Palatinate (MV RLP) is a registered association and has its seat in Ludwigshafen am Rhein . It represents the interests of around 430 museums in Rhineland-Palatinate .

history

founding

The association was founded in 1992. With further training events and excursions, he pursued the goal of promoting networking and professionalization of its members. With the establishment of an independent office in 1999, the association, together with the Ministry of Education, Science, Further Education and Culture (MBWWK) undertook a fundamental analysis of the museum landscape. In 2001, the MBWWK transferred museum advice and project funding to the museum association. Since then he has received institutional funding from the State of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Previously, advising non-state museums was the responsibility of the directors of the state museums in Mainz ( Landesmuseum Mainz ), Koblenz ( Landesmuseum Koblenz ), Trier ( Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier ) and the Palatinate History Museum in Speyer . As so-called “state shop stewards for museum advice”, they advocate a regular exchange of full-time and voluntary museum employees - as part of their official business.

Development of the Rhineland-Palatinate museum landscape

Until 1950 there were only about 50 museums in Rhineland-Palatinate. Between 1950 and 1970, around 25 more were added to these. A “museum boom” began in the 1970s; From 1970 to 2000 there were over 250 museums. Due to its predominantly rural structure, Rhineland-Palatinate is primarily characterized by smaller, voluntary museums. They make up around 65% of the museum landscape.

tasks

aims

The aim of his work is to professionalize the museum landscape in Rhineland-Palatinate . To this end, it promotes networking among museums and offers extensive professional collective and individual advice for museums and their owners. In addition to the Ministry of Education, Science, Further Education and Culture (MBWWK), he also advises other political bodies in the country as well as representatives of educational, social and tourism institutions. In addition, the association works closely with the museum advisory institutions of the federal states (KMBL), the German Museum Association , the Institute for Museum Research , the network of European network organizations (NEMO) and the International Council of Museums (ICOM). These tasks are performed by the voluntary board of the museum association and the employees of the office.

Consulting services

For quality assurance and further training, the association relies on a three-level system of networking, collective and individual advice. The museum association also advises on project funding for museums, acting in a non-partisan, independent and professional manner on the core tasks of a museum: collecting, preserving, researching, exhibiting and conveying. In addition, a voluntary registration system has existed since 2004 , according to which it is assessed “whether a museum meets appropriate quality standards according to its type, structure and location”.

The museum association offers information events and training courses on current museum-specific topics at regular intervals. Participation is free for members. The use of individual advice - in writing, by telephone or on site - is free of charge for all museums in the country. The public museum advice in Rhineland-Palatinate is part of the funding for non-state museums.

Members

Of the currently (as of 2014) 430 museums in Rhineland-Palatinate, 184 are members of the association. However, many of the voluntarily supervised museums prefer personal membership. In 2014 the association had a total of 252 museums and private individuals.
