The magazine, which deals with topics related to music education in primary school , has been published quarterly by Schott Music in Mainz since 1996 . The magazine is published by Friedrich Neumann and Frigga Schnelle. Regular authors include Meinhard Ansohn, Wolfgang Hering and Heinrich Herlyn.

Music in elementary school aims to provide suggestions and practical material for teaching appropriate for children. This includes current hits, handicraft suggestions, musicals and classics for children as well as group and movement games. Copies such as sheet music, arrangements and suggested games are included. There is a CD with audio samples and playbacks for each issue. The booklets are thematically oriented and related to the seasonal festivals. In addition, there are special editions of music in the primary school with special focus topics such as “Boomwhackers”, “Shadow games with whistle” or “Glockenspiel”.
