from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Musical Academy of the Bavarian State Orchestra eV is an orchestra made up of members of the Bavarian State Orchestra . It understands its mission to convey symphonic music to broad sections of society.

history

The academy was founded in 1811 by eleven musicians from the Bavarian Royal Court Orchestra for the purpose of organizing subscribed concerts. The brothers Philipp and Joseph Moralt were among the founding members . The Redoutensaal on Prannerstraße in Munich served as the first performance location . From 1818 the academy concerts were held in the newly built court and national theater. After the fire in 1823, they were moved to the Residenztheater . In 1826 King Ludwig I von Klenze had a concert hall with around 1,500 seats - called the Odeon - built to host the concerts of the Musical Academy. The first concert took place there on March 10, 1828.

Initially, the concerts met with little response. This improved with the acquisition of the conductor Franz Lachner . In the beginning he also had difficulties in winning a concert audience and even gave up the direction of the orchestra in 1837. Success only came when he allowed himself to be persuaded to conduct Haydn's Creation on November 1, 1839 . From this performance onwards, the academy's concerts took off. From 1847 on, the Academy was allowed to use the Odeonssaal rent-free. Every year 8 subscription concerts and occasional special concerts were held there. Until it was destroyed on April 25, 1945, the Odeon was available to the Academy as a performance venue.

In the course of its history, the orchestra was headed by Hans von Bülow , Hermann Levi and Richard Strauss . The list of its directors is identical to that of the Bavarian State Orchestra .

present

By handing over a ring of honor on July 28, 2006, the Bavarian State Orchestra appointed the departing General Music Director Zubin Mehta an honorary member of the Musical Academy. Mehta was replaced by the current general music director Kent Nagano .

From October to December 2011 the Musical Academy celebrated its 200th anniversary with several concerts. In this context, the "Chamber Orchestra of the Bavarian State Orchestra", founded by its ranks in the same year, appeared for the first time.
