The subfamily Mustelinae belongs to the marten family (Mustelidae) and includes, among other things, the real marten , the weasel , the mink , and the polecat .

General

They are relatively small predators , their fur is mostly brown or black, with some species there are stripes or other fur markings.

The representatives of the subfamily are distributed almost worldwide, they are only absent in Australia and the Pacific region as well as on Madagascar and other remote islands. As both ground-dwelling and tree-dwelling species, they use a wide variety of habitats.

Genera

Depending on the point of view, 33 to 35 species in 10 to 11 genera were counted to this subfamily . According to recent genetic studies, however, only the genera Mustela and Neovison belong to this subfamily and thus only three genera with a total of 19 species.

Before that, the silver badger ( Taxidea taxus ) from the subfamily Taxidiinae was sometimes assigned to the subfamily Mustelinae.

Danger

All species of this subfamily are in the Red List of Threatened Species of the World Conservation Union led IUCN. Three types are as endangered ( Endangered referred to); three species are also placed in the Vulnerable category ; one species is assigned the category Near Threatened ; For two species, insufficient data ( data deficient ) are available for an assessment and the remaining species are listed as safe ( Least Concern ).
