Muzaffer Ayata (born January 1, 1956 in the village of Tezharap / Üstüntaş in the Siverek district , Urfa province ) is a leadership functionary of the Kurdistan Workers' Party .

Muzaffer Ayata claims to have had a happy childhood in rural south-east Turkey. At the age of five he went to primary school in the county town of Siverek. There he learned Turkish and from friends Zazaki . Ayata then graduated from middle school and high school and enrolled in Ankara to study. There he met Abdullah Öcalan , whom he regarded as a “natural leader”. In the third academic year 1978, a year of intense domestic political turbulence and violent conflicts, he gave up his studies and “went to Kurdistan”.

Ayata was caught on March 17, 1980 and suffered considerable torture while in police custody for a month. He is then transferred to Diyarbakır for pre- trial detention . In his book "Tarihe ateşten bir sayfa: Diyarbakır zindanı", published by PKK Verlag, he describes the conditions of detention in the early days as barbarism and torture.

His trial in the Diyarbakır Grand Criminal Chamber begins in April 1981 and ends in 1982 or 1983 with a death sentence. In the automatic appeal hearing before the Yargıtay , the 1986 judgment is upheld. The execution of the sentence is threatened by 1990, when it will be commuted to 40 years imprisonment.

Ayata was released from prison at the age of 45 after serving more than 20 years in prison. He joins the Kurdish HADEP and leaves Turkey in 2002 and goes to Germany, as the execution of the remaining sentence is imminent. Ayata's application for asylum is rejected. He receives a toleration .

In Germany, Ayata is charged with ring leadership in the PKK and sentenced in April 2008 to a prison term of three years and six months. Turkey requests his extradition. Ayata was released in October 2009.
