MyPaint is a free , platform-independent graphics software with a focus on digital painting and drawing . The range of functions includes support for pressure-sensitive graphics tablets .
MyPaint is written in the programming languages C , C ++ and Python and has a graphical user interface based on GTK + and Cairo .
MyPaint has been developed since 2004; the first release (version 0.1) took place on March 12, 2005. In November 2010, version 0.9.0 and finally on November 22, 2011, version 1.0.0 was released. Version 2.0.0 is currently under development. It is distributed as free software also in source code under the conditions of version 2 of the GNU General Public License (GPL). In the popular Linux distributions Ubuntu and Fedora, it can be installed directly from the standard package sources.
Range of functions
Graphics tablet
The support of pressure-sensitive graphics tablets reproduces natural painting and drawing. The strength of the pressure can be adjusted to behavior and preferences using a curve.
Brushes and pens
Many different pens and brushes are already included in the basic package and can be supplemented with brush templates from other manufacturers. But it is also possible to create your own brushes. The brush editor in Mypaint is a very extensive tool for editing and creating your own brush templates. A comprehensive tutorial can be found in the wiki of the Mypaint project.
Levels
Mypaint supports working in layers that can be offset against each other in different ways. At the moment (version 1.0.0) the modes: Normal, Multiply, Burn, Dodge and Screen are available. If the work is carefully planned, very difficult effects can be achieved. Different painting backgrounds can also be set. A selection is included in the basic package and can be expanded with your own templates.
File format
The standard file format is the OpenRaster file format (* .ora). The GIMP graphics software can load and edit these files with all levels via a plug-in . Other file formats supported by Mypaint are JPEG and PNG , but these file formats do not support layers.
