The series focuses on the widowed Steve Douglas and his three sons, eighteen year old Mike, fourteen year old Robbie and seven year old Chip. The male household also includes Steve's good-natured father-in-law Michael Francis O'Casey called Bub, who actively supports Steve in bringing up the young boys. The family is completed by the Bobtail Tramp. In addition to his work as a flight engineer, father Steve has to manage the chaotic male household with his three sons. Pranks, stress at school and first lovesickness keep him busy.

Over time, changes in the line-up can be seen. After the eldest son moved out (or Tim Considines left the series), the adoptive son Ernest Thompson, called Ernie, was accepted into the family. Furthermore, Uncle Charley O'Casey joins and "replaces" his brother Michael, since his actor William Frawley died in 1966. Steve later finds a new wife in the widowed teacher Barbara Harper, who has a daughter named Dodie.
