Mystus (from the Greek mustès “from the mysteries”, or mystax “beard”) are a species of spiny catfish from the order of the catfish (Siluriformes)livingin fresh waters in Asia . The distribution area of the species-rich genus extends from Asia Minor to Central Asia , the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia , including the Great Sunda Islands , via China to the Amur river basin .
features
Mystus species are 7 to 46 cm long and have an elongated, spindle-shaped, scaly body that is slightly flattened at the sides. The head is short, the eyes are relatively large and not covered by skin. The anterior maxillary barbels of the four pairs of barbels are strikingly long. The back line is more curved than the belly line. The dorsal fin, supported by a sawn spine, is short and begins at the highest point of the back line. The adipose fin behind it is relatively long, the anal fin moderately long. The pelvic fins are provided with a spike. The caudal fin is forked.
