Néstor Torres (born April 21, 1957 in Mayagüez ) is a Puerto Rican jazz flutist .

Live and act

Torres, who grew up in Puerto Rico, was musically promoted by his father, a vibraphonist, who introduced him to Cal Tjader , Dave Brubeck and Tito Puente at an early age . After he began playing drums from the age of five, he changed his mind at the age of twelve. He began to take flute lessons at the Escuela Libre de Música and then to attend the Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico . At the age of 18 he moved to New York City with his family. He studied first at Mannes College of Music in New York, then in Boston at the New England Conservatory of Music and at Berklee College of Music until 1977. Back in New York he played with Puente and Eddie Palmieri , who supported him, but also worked in Charanga groups such as the Orchestra Rytmo Africa-Cubana .

Since 1981 he has recorded albums under his own name. In the same year he moved to Miami, where he played in salsa bands and taught at the colleges of South Florida. His album Morning Ride , which was released in 1990 on Verve Records , became the top ten bestseller on the jazz charts. A boat accident initially impaired the further career of Torres; however, other albums followed regularly. This Side of Paradise was awarded a Latin Grammy for "Best Pop Instrumental Album" in 2001. The live album Jazz Flute Traditions contains cover versions of well-known tracks for jazz flute, such as Rahsaan Roland Kirk's Serenade to a Cuckoo , Herbie Mann's Memphis Underground or Eric Dolphys Gazzelloni .
