The species occurs in Colombia and Panama .

The distribution area includes moist forest edges , mostly near water or clearings , particularly dense bamboo undergrowth mostly up to 600, sometimes up to 1500 m height.

The Latin additional species comes from the Latin niger 'black' and the Latin caput, -ceps 'head' .

features

The bird is about 16 cm tall and weighs between 23 and 24 g. The male is completely black with no special features, only the flanks are dark gray, the undersides of the flight feathers have white edges. The female is red-brown on the upper side, the wings and the tail, the head, throat and upper breast are blackish-gray with pale white stripes, the underside is yellowish-brown.

The species is monotypical .
