The 21 series is a series of electric locomotives that has been in use by the NMBS / SNCB since 1984 and is used for both passenger and freight trains. The largest areas of application are Intercity and InterRegio trains across the country.

The vehicles are almost identical to the 27 series , but have about 25 percent less power. The 11 and 12 series (out of service since 2012) are a variant of this series and are multi-system capable and equipped with the necessary train control systems for the Netherlands and France.

A total of 60 machines with company numbers from 2101 to 2160 were built, all of which are still in use. The vehicles of this series are equipped with the automatic train control systems Memor and TBL1 + equipped, they also have one with the driving trailer M4 compatible shuttle train .

In May 2018, 9 machines of this type were transferred to Poland.

Special

  • The locomotives 2131 to 2160 have a rain gutter over the windshield, in contrast to the vehicles 2101 to 2130.
  • Number 2130 was 1993 experimental locomotive no. 1901 rebuilt.
