The 604 and 605 series are combustion railcars of the National Company of the Belgian Railways , which were built by Ateliers Germain from 1954 to 1955 . They received the series designations of the series 604 (1934) and series 605 (1935) diesel multiple units built in the 1930s and destroyed in World War II . From 1971 onwards they were referred to as series 44 and series 45 .

history

After the Second World War, most of the Belgian diesel railcars and many steam-powered vehicles were destroyed, so that the National Society of Belgian Railways remedied the situation with several new orders in the early 1950s. These new orders also included 10 class 604 railcars and 10 class 605 railcars. These technically related series were ordered from Ateliers Germain and intended for non-electrified rail lines with higher traffic volumes. Less busy, smaller branch lines were already available from 1950 railcars of series 554 operated.

The railcars were mainly used on the Athus-Maas-Line between Dinant and Virton during their active service time . In 1971 the vehicles of the 604 series were renamed to the 44 series and the 605 series to the 45 series.

Railcar 4409 was retired in May 1987 after an accident. In the early morning of March 9, 1998, there was an accident with railcar 4507, which collided with a work train hauled by class 52 between the villages of Gedinne and Vonêche and derailed. Seven people were slightly injured. The railcar was badly damaged and then retired.

In the mid-1990s, some 44 series vehicles were repainted from the original red and yellow color scheme to a blue and yellow color scheme. The class 44 railcars were withdrawn from service in the spring of 2002 following the delivery of the class 41 . Some series 45 units were held in reserve until December 2002, when they too were shut down. Three vehicles of the series 44 and one vehicle of the series 45 were acquired by museum railways; The NMBS / SNCB itself is preserving one of the last two railcars of the 45 class in regular service.

technology

The rows 604 and 605 have the same geometric dimensions and the same number of seats. The difference between the two vehicle series lies in the design of the drive: the 604 series has a single 12-cylinder diesel engine from General Motors with an output of 356 kW. This mechanically drives both wheel sets of a bogie ; the other bogie is designed as a pure running bogie. The 605 series, on the other hand, has two six-cylinder engines, also manufactured by General Motors, each of which drives a wheel set on each bogie via hydraulic power transmission from Voith . The output of these motors is 118 kW each, so that the output of the series is 236 kW. With their two engines, the 605 series vehicles have a mass 1.2 t higher.
