The Norwegian steam locomotive series NSB Type 23 was built in two versions in 1907 and 1911 by Hamar Jernstøberi in Hamar and in 1924 and 1925 by Thunes mekaniske in Oslo and Norsk Maskin Industri ( Thune and Hamar ) for Norges Statsbaner .

history

NSB type 23a

Hamar Jernstøberi's first two-cylinder wet steam locomotive with Heusinger controls and a C wheel arrangement was given the number 159. It was built in 1907 for shunting ore trains in Narvik and had an axle load of 14 tons. It was followed by a second copy in 1911, which was given the number 165.

In winter the locomotives were used for snow clearing.

NSB type 23b

1924 built Thunes mekaniske verksted with the numbers 439-443 and in 1924 and 1925 the consortium Norsk Maskin Industri consisting of Thunes mekaniske verksted and Hamar Jernstøberi with the numbers 454-460 twelve similar, but heavier locomotives, which were designated as type series 23b. They were intended for shunting in the south of the country.

Use and whereabouts

The 23a 165 locomotive was retired on March 26, 1960 after almost 50 years of service. Locomotive 23a 159 was decommissioned on April 14, 1969 and sold to Brødrene Holmlund in Narvik for scrapping . It stood there for several years until it was handed over to the Teknisk museum in Narvik in May 1978 . The locomotive was then parked on the NSB site in Narvik. In the early 1980s, NSB needed this space and the locomotive was returned to the scrap dealer and this time scrapped. It was the locomotive that was in operation in Narvik for the longest period from 1907 to 1969 and the last steam locomotive that NSB had used in Narvik.

The type 23b locomotives were mainly used in southern Norway in the districts of Trondheim, Oslo and Drammen. Only 23b 460 was transferred from Oslo to Narvik on July 1, 1948, where it remained in Trondheim until it was relocated on October 29, 1950. There it was retired with the numbers 442 and 454 as well as 457 in Oslo as the last locomotives of the series on November 9, 1970.

What remained:

  • 23b 442 is a cutaway model in the Norsk Teknisk Museum
  • 23b 443 , which was retired on October 22, 1970, belongs to the Norwegian Railway Museum . After a long period of storage at Kornsjø train station, it was brought to the Maihaugen Museum in Lillehammer in 1997 .
