Na Hye-sok (born April 18, 1896 in Suwon , Gyeonggi-do , † December 10, 1948 in Seoul ) was a Korean poet and writer, painter and feminist philosopher.

Life

Na Hye-sok was born the fourth child of a wealthy family. Na graduated from the top of her class at Jin Myeong Girls' High School in 1913. Encouraged by her brother, Na studied Western painting at a women's art college in Tokyo.

Na Hye-sok is considered a pioneer of Korean feminist writing and painting. Her most important written work is the short story Kyonghui (Hangul: 경희) published in 1918. In it, a woman discovers herself and then searches for meaning in life as a "new woman ". This was the first feminist short story in Korean literature.
