Umbilical artery
As umbilical artery ( umbilical artery ) is referred to a paired arterial blood vessel , which is connected to the umbilical vein of the umbilical happens. The two umbilical arteries arise as viscera of the aorta . By forming an anastomosis with the fifth lumbar artery , a wall-side (parietal) root is created and thus the two definitive umbilical arteries . They pull along the urachus (urinary duct) to the navel and in the fetus lead oxygen-poor blood to the placenta .
Since the two fifth lumbar arteries develop into the respective iliac arteries, the umbilical artery arises postnatally from the internal iliac artery on both sides , in horses even from the internal pudendal artery . The distal section of the umbilical arteries that is remote from the origin closes (obliterates) after birth and becomes two cord-like ligaments ( ligamentum teres vesicae ) that run in the lateral ligaments of the urinary bladder. In humans, the obliterated umbilical arteries lie in the medial umbilical plica , which borders the medial inguinal fossa towards the middle.
The proximal section near the origin still carries blood in adults and supplies the urinary bladder ( arteria vesicalis superior ) and vas deferens , in female cloven-hoofed also large parts of the uterus ( arteria uterina ).
