Urachus

The urachus or urinary duct is an elongated structure in the embryo that extends from the apex of the later bladder to the umbilical cord . It contains a cavity ( lumen ). The urachus is located outside the peritoneum in the abdominal wall and can be referred to as the remainder of the allantoic duct, which arises from the fact that in the further development of the embryo, embryonic vessels also sprout into the umbilical cord. As a rule, before the end of the fetal period, the urachus closes to form the median umbilical ligament ("urachus cord"), known in veterinary medicine as the "urachus navel" or "urachus scar". In adults, the obliterated urachus is found in the plica umbilicalis mediana.
