The newsletter of the Jewish Community of Berlin and the Association of Jewish Communities in the German Democratic Republic existed for 37 years. Despite all its shortcomings as a source of information and entertainment, this quarterly was a medium for Jewish self-understanding in the GDR.

development

According to Laurence Duchaine, a doctoral student at the Lyon School of Literature and Humanities , there was a "formatting phase" in the history of the magazine until around 1970, a second phase of redesign (around 1971 to 1985), and a third and final stage Mid-1980s, in which the paper reflected an activation of Jewish community life. When Dr. Kirchner joined the editorial team, in their opinion the magazine opened up to worldwide developments and advocated a Judeo-Christian dialogue . Literary contributions also raised the demand for content.

The newsletter was last published quarterly with a circulation of 1,800 to 2,000 copies and went to both the Jewish communities and to interested parties, especially in Protestant parishes that were open to it .

From 1982 the newspaper was called the news sheet of the Association of Jewish Communities in the German Democratic Republic .

editorial staff

The editorial team was operated by a college which in 1990 consisted of the following members:

Content

The cover sheet was usually provided with a photograph of a Jewish cult or everyday object. After an introductory consideration, the editions initially included general historical and cultural-historical essays on Jewish life in the past and present, relating to places in the GDR, but also to events in international Judaism. This was followed by regional news from the individual Jewish communities in the GDR. This was followed by book reviews, recipes, messages about new additions to the Berlin Jewish Library, information on the transmission of Sabbath celebrations on GDR radio, addresses and other organizational messages, times of worship in the Berlin synagogue "Temple of Peace" as well as birthday greetings and expressions of mourning for deceased community members.

Licensing

The magazine has been licensed by the press office of the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the GDR since July 1, 1963 under the number 429.
