The naked-eared squirrel monkey ( Saimiri ustus ) is a primate species from the New World monkey group .
features
Face-to-face squirrel monkeys reach a head body length of 30 to 38 centimeters, in addition there is the 41 to 47 centimeter long tail. Their weight is around 0.7 to 0.9 kilograms. Their fur is golden yellow on the back, the belly is slightly lighter. The forearms, hands and feet are orange-yellow. The face is white, the cap on the top of the head is colored gray-brown. The name-giving feature is the lack of tufts of ears which, together with the yellowish back, distinguish this species from the common squirrel monkey .
distribution and habitat
Face-to- face squirrel monkeys are found exclusively in the Amazon basin in western Brazil . Its range is limited in the north by the Amazon and in the east by the Rio Tapajós and extends in the southwest to the Bolivian border. Their habitat is forests, they are mainly found in temporarily flooded river forests and secondary forests .
Way of life
Little is known about the way of life of the naked squirrel monkeys, presumably it largely corresponds to that of the other squirrel monkeys. They are diurnal tree dwellers who climb skillfully and quickly through the branches. They live in large groups made up of numerous males and females, the social relationships are built around the females, which establish a hierarchy. Their diet consists mainly of fruits and insects.
Danger
Although these primates have a large distribution area, this is strongly affected by deforestation and the conversion into agricultural land. The IUCN fears that the total population will decline by 20 to 25% in the next 25 years and lists the species as " near threatened ".
