Nadim ( Arabic نديم, DMG Nadīm ) is an Arabic male given name meaning "drinking companion" (in the figurative sense: "good friend, confidant"), which also occurs as a family name . It occurs in the Middle East and in the Balkans among Christians, Jews and Muslims. Another spelling of the name, which occurs particularly among Muslims in India and Pakistan, is (English) Nadeem . The Turkish form of the name is Nedim .
In the 11th century Nadīm was an honorary office at the court of Hamadan in Persia. The "drinking companion" had to ensure that the guests invited by the prince were entertained at social gatherings.
