Patience used as a nail bank on the Belem

A nail bank is a device for fastening mating nails on sailing ships . It is a simple board that has holes at regular intervals into which the fastening nails can be inserted. The distance depends on the thickness of the rope that is to be attached there. There are also nail banks with holes of different sizes in order to be able to accommodate both ropes and traps as well as lines, for example for the signal flags . Nail banks are generally inward along the Schanz , between shrouds or between Betingen , here in the form of patience , fixed or - especially on rah rigged ships - in addition directly to the mast in the form of mast gardens .

The nail bank has the advantage over other mounting options that the desired rope can be loosened by simply pulling the corresponding mounting nail upwards so that it ruffles out . For this, a clean line guide is essential when mooring, otherwise a wuling is the result.
