history

The forest village of Grieps around 1918

On November 3, 1911, a rental agreement was signed between the municipality of Calvörde and the ducal chamber management of Braunschweig Forest. The annual rent was 43 marks. The contract was valid from January 1, 1912 to December 31, 1928. A subsequent contract from 1924 demanded 30 Reichsmarks. Another was confirmed from January 1, 1929 to December 31, 1940 by the Braunschweig State Forestry Office for 36 Reichsmark rent. In 1928 the tennis court was repaired and in 1934 a shooting range was built, as was a festival area for folk festivals. In 1926 the forest restaurant Grieps Kaffee was opened. Further developments were planned, but were not implemented due to the Second World War .

After the Second World War, the forest site was used exclusively by the Soviet occupation army as a site for accommodation barracks, supply facilities and as a sports and cultural center for around 20,000 soldiers. In 1947 the barrack camp was closed . Thanks to the efforts of sports directors Hans Kunze and Paul Reinboth from the FDJ , the grief was repaired and enlarged. In 1957 an additional dance floor was added to the cafe. In the 1950s, folk festivals were held again in the forest village. In 1967 the first riding facility was built behind the football field. From April 27, 1972 to April 29, 1972, the eliminations of the eventing tests for the Olympic Games were carried out in the Calvörder Grieps. In 1974 the GDR championships for youth and juniors took place here. The championships of the German Equestrian Federation of the GDR were also held from August 26th to August 28th, 1977 in the Grieps.

The soccer field was not in the land register of the municipality of Calvörde until 2009, a question of ownership was raised, and in 1996 the Prime Minister Reinhard Höppner who was present took the first step to arrange for a transfer of ownership. In 2009, the transfer of ownership finally happened after another intervention by Mayor Olaf Schmidt.

Today's grief

Horse tower in the equestrian stadium

Today (2010) one speaks of Grieps, less often of the forest village of Grieps. A modern hotel with a restaurant and outdoor terrace can now be found in the Grieps. There are several equestrian facilities in the south. These are known as the equestrian stadium. For the local recreation area, a sports boat harbor was built on the Mittelland Canal on May 18, 2013. Construction began in 2009. The old barracks of the Soviet army and an old shooting range from the Calvörde rifle club can still be seen today.

Equestrian stadium

The year of construction of today's equestrian stadium, south of the football field, was 1977, a boulder on the judges' tower still reminds of this today with the inscription: In memory of 1977 . The stadium consists of a main and staging area (riding arena) and several smaller side areas. The Reit- und Fahrverein Calvörde eV is registered as the leaseholder of the equestrian stadium. In 2008 and 2009 the riding arena was renovated.

Festivals

Every year, the Calvörde Horse Days are celebrated with a tournament in the Grieps. The Calvörde Grand Prix will be held here. A foal show is offered every year. The Calvörde festivals and the Emig Cup , a football tournament for the region, also took place here more often .
