NAIRI: Tower of Shirin is a point-and-click adventure and visual novel developed by Dutch indie game developer HomeBearStudio and published by Another Indie and Hound Picked Games. The game was released on November 29, 2018 for Windows and Nintendo Switch .

Game mechanics

The player takes on the role of the protagonist Nairi. The plot is primarily told in visual novel format, but the player has to navigate different locations, solve puzzles and combine objects in order to advance. At certain points the player can communicate with other characters and get more background information about the world and the storyline. The player can find hidden coins in almost every scene; these can be used to unlock concept art of the game.

action

Nairi is a human girl who lives in the wealthy district of Shirin. When her tutor, a talking raccoon, tells her that she must leave the house and never return, she escapes and is eventually smuggled out of the district. She later explores the lower districts of Shirin and the tower that a friend, Rex, learned about. Soon Nairi discovers an ancient magical world and that it plays a bigger role than she expected.

development

The game was funded by 278 backers through a Kickstarter campaign in October 2016. The aim of the campaign was to collect a total of € 7,500; this goal was exceeded with a total of € 8,253. The game was written, designed and programmed by Josh van Kuilenburg, while the graphics, animations and Japanese localization were done by You Miichi. Antonio Garcia was responsible for editing the dialogues and for the Spanish localization. The game has also been translated into German by Michael Stein and Marcel Weyers , into French by Christophe Pallarès, into Italian by Daring Touch and into Chinese by Eric Lin and Allen Ren. The graphic style was inspired by Studio Ghibli as well as Disney and Pixar .

reception

The game received positive reviews overall, with reviewers praising the story, art, and challenging puzzles but criticizing the confusing navigation, some bugs, and lack of voice acting.

A Kay Purcell from GAMING TREND gave a “Great” score of 80 out of 100 and said, “Nairi: Tower of Shirin is a fun, cute and quirky point-and-click adventure. Silly and slightly morbid, Nairi shines with unique characters, hand-drawn graphics and challenging but fair puzzles. It's slowed down a bit by the confusing navigation, a few bugs, and the lack of a way to save progress, but this charming little gem is a must for fans of the genre. "

John Friscia from Nintendo Enthusiast gave a 7.5 out of 10 and said: “NAIRI: Tower of Shirin is a wonderful and entertaining puzzle adventure with charming characters. As a newbie to puzzles, it took me 8-10 hours, but that may vary with others. "

Ben Bayliss from DualShockers gave a 7.5 out of 10 and said: “My time with Nairi: Tower of Shirin was both a real acid test for the brain with difficult puzzles and a charming retreat where I lost myself in a story that made me feel has tied up. The graphic style kept the title visually appealing and twists and turns made it interesting. The controls on the Switch are fantastic and ideally should be your preferred platform for this title. "

JPGames called the game “a little oasis for puzzle cats” and praised the German translation: “Most of it was translated well, but we noticed minor errors, [...] but the translation is so good that the keywords are always used as clues for the Puzzles fit. "
