history
The Nairobi City Stadium was built in the 1930s, is one of the oldest sports facilities in the Kenyan capital and was formerly known as the African Stadium or Donholm Road Stadium . In 1958 the stadium received a new grandstand and the sanitary facilities were improved . This was funded with £ 6,600 from the African Trust Fund .
After Kenya's independence in 1963, it was renamed Jogoo Road Stadium . It served as the main venue for competitions in football and athletics until the 1980s, before the Nyayo National Stadium and later the Moi International Sports Center overtook it.
The most significant athletics event held at the Nairobi City Stadium was the Jomo Kenyatta Memorial Meeting held in 1979 in honor of Jomo Kenyatta , who died a year earlier, and attended by greats of the scene such as Henry Rono , Alberto Salazar and Edwin Moses .
With a capacity of 15,000, it is now used primarily as a football venue for several clubs in Nairobi, including Gor Mahia FC , FC Mahakama and the Nairobi City Stars . As part of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa which started FIFA the "Football for Africa" project (dt .: football for Africa ), which at the Nairobi City Stadium, a new artificial turf was laid.
