Nakabayashi Chikutō , also read Chikudō ( Japanese 中 林 竹 洞 , real first name Nariaki ( 成 昌 ), other artist names: Chūtan ( 沖 澹 ), Taigen'an ( 太原 庵 ), Tōzan Inshi ( 東山 隠 士 ); born 1776 , in Nagoya ; died April 27, 1853 ) was a Japanese painter in the Nanga style of the late Edo period .

life and work

Nakabayashi Chikutō was the son of a doctor in Nagoya who showed an early interest in painting. When he was about 14 years old, Kamiya Ten'yū took over his initial painting training , as with Yamamoto Baiitsu . Chikutō's first work included copies of old paintings. He was impressed by the ink paintings of Li Qing from the Yuan period , especially with regard to the depiction of bamboo. Ni Zan's painting technique also interested him. At the age of twenty, Chikutō opened his own studio in a small temple and lived and worked there very comfortably.

Interested in classical literature, Chikutō moved to Kyoto with Baiitsu in 1803 and became a member of a literary circle around the philosopher Rai San'yo ( 頼 山陽 ; 1780-1832) and the Nanga painter Uragami Shunkin ( 浦 上 春 琴 ; 1779-1846). He trained further under Yamada Kujō and worked with Uragami Shunkin. - Chikutō published an illustrated book ( 画 道 金剛 杵 , Gadō kongōsho ) and dealt with the basics of painting. He wrote important works on this topic, such as "Chikutō: Theory of Painting" ( 竹 洞 画 論 , Chikutō garon ; 1800) and "Chikutō: Theory of image design" ( 竹 洞 画稿 , Chikutō gakyō ; 1815).

Chikutō's son Chikkei ( 竹 渓 ) received his first education from his father, in addition from Yamamoto Baiitsu. Then he developed his own style, in which the painting also included that of the Northern School of the Song era .
