Tatsuya Nakadai
Tatsuya Nakadai ( Japanese 仲 代 達 矢 Nakadai Tatsuya , actually Motohisa Nakadai ; born December 13, 1932 in Tokyo ) is a Japanese actor . He became internationally known through his longstanding collaboration with directors Akira Kurosawa and Masaki Kobayashi .
Life
Tatsuya Nakadai had from 1952 to 1955 an acting training with the theater group Haiyu-za, of which he was a member until 1979. He made his film debut in a dialogless role of a samurai in Akira Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai (1954). In Masaki Kobayashi's trilogy Barefoot Through Hell (1959–1961) he played a pacifist who was sent to the front as a soldier with such expressiveness that he became a celebrated superstar almost overnight in Japan.
He gained international fame through his roles with Kurosawa, who initially cast him in negative roles, such as the killer in Yojimbo - The Bodyguard (1961) and an intriguer in Sanjuro (1962). After the open break between the director and his regular lead actor Toshirō Mifune , Nakadai played the leading roles in Kurosawa's late works Kagemusha (1980) and Ran (1985). To date, he has appeared in over 120 films and is still active as an actor.
Nakadai received a Kinema Junpo Award for Best Actor in the films Sanjuro and Harakiri in 1963 . Since 1975 he has been running a private school for young actors called "Mumei-juku".
In 2007 Nakadai was honored as a person with special cultural merits , in 2015 he was awarded the Order of Culture .
In 1957 he married Ryo Tomoe, a relationship that lasted until her death in 1996.
The asteroid (14105) Nakadai is named after him.
