Nakamura Gakuryō

Nakamura Gakuryō ( Japanese 中 村 岳 陵 ; born March 10, 1890 in Shimoda ( Shizuoka Prefecture ); died November 20, 1969 ), actually Nakamura Tsunekichi ( 中 村 恒 吉 ), was a Japanese painter in the Nihonga style of the Shōwa period .

life and work

Nakamura moved to Tokyo in 1900 and studied painting in the style of the Tosa School under Kawabe Mitate ( 川 辺 御 楯 ; 1838-1905), then graduated in 1914 from the Tōkyō University of the Arts, the forerunner of the Tōkyō Geijutsu Daigaku . First he exhibited at the state exhibition, called Bunten ( 文 展 ) for short . Then he joined the Kōji-kai, which was working on a further development of the Nihonga. He also took part in the exhibitions of the Sekiyō-kai.

After the resurrected Nihon Bijutsuin began exhibiting in 1912 , Nakamura exhibited there. From the second exhibition he became an associate member of this institution and regularly showed his pictures in the neoclassical style. In 1950, however, he moved to Nitten ( 日 展 ), the successor to the Bunter organization.

In 1947 Nakamura became a member of the Academy of Arts , in 1960 he was recognized by the Mainichi Shimbun and Asahi Shimbun newspapers . In 1962 he received the Order of Culture .

Typical works by Nakamura are “Sand dunes” ( 砂丘 , Sakyū ; 1934), “The balloon rises” ( 気 球 上 が る , Kikyū agaru ; 1950) and “Enlightening sky after the snowfall” ( 雪 ば れ , Yukibare ; 1956).

In 1962 he was honored as a person with special cultural merits and received the Order of Culture .
