Nakura (also: Nokra , Nocra ; Italian Nocra ) is an Eritrean island in the Dahlak archipelago west of Dahlak Kebir . Nakura has an area of 6.44 km², and reaches a height of 48 meters.
During the time of the Italian occupation (1890/91), the Carcere di Nocra prison and later Nocra concentration camp (1936) were founded on the island . Many songs in Eritrea tell of the cruel stories that occurred there.
The island is still used as a prison camp. Amnesty International and other human rights groups have repeatedly complained about the abuse of inmates. In 2005 it was announced that "many political prisoners have been detained without charge or trial." A former prisoner told Amnesty International in 2004 that "some political prisoners in Nakura who belong to evangelical churches are being shackled and tortured for the offense of Bibles and that their Bible be burned "
Christian Solidarity Worldwide reported in June 2017 that 33 Protestant women are being held in the "infamous island prison".
