biography

Nandipha Mntambo studied art at the Michaelis School of Fine Art in Cape Town , South Africa, where she graduated with a Masters in Fine Art in 2007 with distinction.

Mntambo lives and works in South Africa.

Work and way of working

In her work, Mntambo thematizes the human, especially the female body as well as the organic nature of our identity through the use of natural materials. She experiments with different media and forms such as sculpture, video and photography. One of the preferred materials for her work is cowhide, which she often uses as a covering / covering for human bodies - boneless sculptures. This material oscillates between evoking the associations of items of clothing that can be worn according to the individual will and those of bodies that were once inhabited by living, breathing and chewing beings with four stomachs. Mntambo specifically seeks this ambiguity and the game with the sometimes more, sometimes less strong tension and the manipulation of the viewer's gaze.

She says of her work: “My aim is to explore the physical and tactile properties of animal skin and aspects of control that allow or forbid me to manipulate this material in the context of the female body and contemporary art. I have used cowhide to subvert expected associations with physical presence , femininity , sexuality and vulnerability . In my work I try to question and subvert preconceived notions regarding the female body. ”(Quotation from the catalog Nandipha Mntambo: ingabisa. Michale Stevenson (2007))
