Naomi J. Halas
Naomi J. Halas (* 1957 ) is an American physicist and nano- engineer at Rice University . She works in the area where optics and nanosciences meet , nanophotonics .
In 1980, Halas earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from La Salle University , a master's degree in physics from Bryn Mawr College in 1984, and a Ph.D. from the Thomas J. Watson Research Center ( IBM ) in 1987. in physics. She worked as a postdoctoral fellow at AT&T Bell Laboratories . She has been a member of the Rice University faculty since 1989, initially as an assistant professor , from 1994 as an associate professor , and from 1999 with a full professorship. At Rice University she is (as of 2018) Stanley C. Moore Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering , she also holds professorships in chemistry, physics, astronomy, bioengineering, materials science and nanoengineering. Halas is the founding director of the Smalley-Curl Institute for Nanophotonics.
Halas is for the introduction of nanoparticles with tunable optical resonances and the concept of plasmon - hybridization known to declare their properties. Together with Peter Nordlander , she revolutionized the understanding of the optical properties of metallic nanostructures. She particularly tries to ensure the applicability of the developed nano-objects, for example for cancer therapy or the direct utilization of solar energy .
Halas has (as of January 2018) an h-index of 131.
