The Narodowy Instytut Onkologii im. Marii Skłodowskiej-Curie - Państwowy Instytut Badawczy (until 2020 Centrum Onkologii - Instytut im. Marii Skłodowskiej-Curie , German Oncology Center - Maria Skłodowska-Curie Institute ) is an oncological institute based in Warsaw and a successor to the institution on the initiative of Marie Curie founded the Radium Institute in Warsaw in 1932.

The head office is located in Warsaw at ul.Wilhelma Konrada Roentgena 5 and the clinic of the institute is on Wawelska Street.

history

Radium Institute

The institute was founded on May 29, 1932 on the initiative of Maria Skłodowska-Curie as the Radium Institute in Warsaw (Polish: Instytut Radowy w Warszawie ) on Wawelska Street in Warsaw.

Second World War

On August 5, 1944, the hospital became the scene of gruesome crimes by units of the German SS and the police. Sick women and nurses working here were raped and murdered along with the doctors; partially hanged. Fires were set in the hospital and people were burned to death. Captured men were tortured ( Wola massacre ).

Oncology Institute

In 1951 the Radium Institute became Maria-Skłodowska- the State Institute for Cancer Treatment in Gliwice ( Państwowy Instytut Przeciwrakowy w Gliwicach ) and the Oncology Institute in Cracow ( Instytut Onkologii w Krakowie ) and the State Institute for Cancer Treatment in Gliwice ( Państwowy Instytut Przeciwrakowy w Gliwicach ), which had existed since 1947, in 1951. Curie Oncology Institute with headquarters in Warsaw and branches in Krakow and Gliwice .

Thanks to the efforts of the head of Polish oncology, Professor Tadeusz Koszarowski , a large investment in new building was made for the institute in the Ursynów district of Warsaw . The first premises were released for use in 1984. In the same year the oncology institute was established in Centrum Onkologii - Instytut im. Marii Skłodowskiej-Curie (Center for Oncology - Maria Skłodowska-Curie Institute).

The institute is a leading institution in the field of oncology in Poland.
