Narowal is a district capital in the province of Punjab in Pakistan .

Narowal is around 100 km northeast of the provincial capital Lahore in the northeast of the Punjab province and 234 m. ü. d. M. In the 2017 census, Narowal had 103 067 inhabitants.

history

According to legend, Narowal was founded in the 12th century and named after the founder of the city. The seat of the district Narowal Tehsil became the city in 1989. In 1991 Narowal became the capital of the district Narowal , when the surrounding area was separated from the district Sialkot .

Economy and Transport

The city's geographic location, right on the border with India, had an inhibiting effect on the economy for a long time after Pakistan gained independence in 1947. Rice is mainly grown in the area around the city. Narowal is located on the 1915 railway line from Lahore to Wazirabad . There are direct train connections. a. with Karachi , Sialkot and Lahore. Narowal train station was renovated in 2017. Until 1947, Narowal was a junction of three railway lines, two of which (the Narowal-Dera Baba Nanak line and the Narowal-Chak Amru line) were closed after 1947.

Culture

Narowal is known for its university, whose campus was built and laid out in 2012. Faiz Ahmed Park, named after the writer Faiz Ahmed Faiz , who was born in the village of Kala Qadir near the city, is also popular . The brick-built Anglican Epiphany Church in the city center forms an attractive contrast to the numerous mosques in the city.

The Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur , an important place of pilgrimage and the largest shrine of Sikhism , was built a few kilometers east of Narowal, on the spot where Nanak Dev , the founder of Sikhism, died in 1539. In 2018, the Cartarpur Corridor , a 4.7 km driveway from the Indian border to the shrine, was created to allow Indian citizens to visit the shrine without a visa, and it was inaugurated on November 9, 2019 by the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan .
