The Fools' Staircase is one with trompe l'oeil of the Renaissance out schmücktes staircase in the so-called Italian cultivation of Trausnitz . The staircase is the only monumental image in this style and at the same time the earliest representation of Italian drama north of the Alps.

Emergence

The design of the wall painting with life-size people was commissioned in 1575 by Duke Wilhelm V of Bavaria, who had lived in Landshut-Trausnitz since 1568, after his impoverishment and the departure of an acting troupe who were engaged at court. The paintings were then designed by Friedrich Sustris and executed by Alessandro Paduano from 1575 to 1579 . The paintings were partially destroyed by fire in 1961, but have been restored.

Motifs

On the fool's staircase are the Venetian merchant Pantalone riding a donkey in the form of a ridiculous old lover, followed by his servant Zanni with an enema syringe , and other figures from the Italian Commedia dell'arte , including a doctor with a urinary glass .
