Natali Helberger

Natali Helberger (* 1970 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German legal scholar and professor who has held the chair for information law at the legal department of the University of Amsterdam since 2013 . Her focus is on the effects of digital technologies on people, society and the law. Helberger was and is a member of the Council of Europe's Expert Committee on Artificial Intelligence and the Connect Advisory Forum of the European Commission on Information Technologies.

Focus

Helberger deals with filter bubbles , smart TV , news recommendation algorithms and data protection . In doing so, she examines the political and legal issues of an increasingly digital society and is also involved in legislative processes - for example, she advised the EU on the drafting of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

In 2015 she received an ERC Starting Grant from the European Research Council for her work on the influence of learning systems and recommendation algorithms for personalized content on the role of the media in democracy.

Since 2019 she has been leading the focus area "Human (e) AI" at the University of Amsterdam. On November 1, 2019, the University of Amsterdam will award her the title of University Professor (universiteitshoogleraar) with the interdisciplinary research focus on artificial intelligence and its influence on people and society.

Helberger is also co-editor of the journal Internet Policy Review . In 2014 she was one of the first to sign an appeal against mass surveillance .
