Natalie Nougayrède (born May 29, 1966 in Dijon , Département Côte-d'Or , France ) is a French journalist. From March 1, 2013 to May 14, 2014 she was editor-in-chief of the French daily Le Monde . She has been a columnist for the British Guardian since then .

Life

Nougayrède grew up in Great Britain and Canada and attended bilingual schools there, where both French and English were taught. In Canada she also learned the Russian language. In 1988 she graduated from the Institut d'études politiques (IEP) in Strasbourg . In 1990 she completed her training at the Center de formation des journalistes in the Rue du Louvre in Paris .

In 1991, Nougayrède began her journalistic career as a correspondent for the French daily newspaper Liberation and the British Broadcasting Corporation ( BBC ) in what was then Czechoslovakia and later for Liberation and Radio France Internationale (RFI) in the Caucasus . In 1995 she became editor of the Portraits column at Liberation .

For Le Monde , Nougayrède first went to Ukraine and Russia , where she became a correspondent in Moscow . As a foreign policy correspondent, she was a juror for the French Prix ​​de la Presse Diplomatique in 2004 . On March 1, 2013, they elected 79.4% of the members of the Le Monde Editors' Association as the new editor-in-chief after being proposed by shareholders Pierre Bergé , Xavier Niel and Mathieu Pigasse . She became the successor of Érik Izraelewicz , who died of a heart attack in the editorial office in November 2012. The decision of the editors' association was confirmed by the supervisory board on March 6, 2013.

After a dispute over the editorial reorganization of Le Monde , Nougayrède resigned on May 14, 2014. Among other things, it intended to bring the print and online editions closer together. Numerous journalists should change their posts. The plans met with massive criticism from the editors.

Nougayrède left Le Monde in September 2014 and started working as editor and commentator on foreign affairs for the British daily The Guardian in October 2014 .
