Nathaniel Mayer (born February 10, 1944 in Detroit , † November 1, 2008 ibid) was an American rhythm and blues singer who mainly released records in the 1960s.
Musical career
The singer with African roots grew up in his native Detroit and sang his first single record at the age of 17 . This was released in 1961 by the Detroit record company Fortune. In addition to the name of the singer, the label also gave the name of the backing band The Fabulous Twilights. This was also retained in the following record releases. In early 1962 Mayer's second single was released, the A-side of which was entitled Village of Love . This song developed into Mayer's greatest record success, because it was listed by the music magazine Billbord on their Hot 100 hit list for twelve weeks and reached number 22 as the best value. The single was initially released under catalog number Fortune 545. When the successful performance of Village of Love became apparent, the parent company United Artists took over the distribution under their own catalog number 449. The record was also distributed in Great Britain and Australia.
By 1964, Nathaniel Mayer had released a total of nine singles, but after Village of Love none of the titles made it into the hit lists. On his last two singles, Mayer had separated from the Fabulous Twilights and produced the recordings with the groups The Dynamics and The Fortune Braves. Since no record company was interested in Mayer afterwards, he put together his own revue with Detroit soul singers , with whom he performed in the Detroit area. After he had to stop the revue in 1975, Mayer disappeared from the scene for several years. A comeback with their own record company Love Dog and a self-produced single in 1985 failed. The singer of the early 1960s was not remembered until the millennium celebrations , and Mayer appeared at numerous events in both the United States and Canada. In 2002 and 2005 the New York record company Norton brought out two new singles with him, and in 2007 Mayer went on a European tour. A year later he suffered several strokes, of which he died on November 1, 2008 after months in hospital.
