The Nation River is an approximately 110 km long right tributary of the Yukon River in the west of the Canadian Yukon Territory and in the east of Alaska .
The river has its source in the West Nahoni Mountains in the Yukon Territory , flows southwest, crosses the Canadian-American border south of Indian Grave Mountain and flows into the Yukon River 50 km northwest of Eagle . The lower reaches of the Nation River lies in the Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve .
From 1897 to 1898, the river gained a certain importance through a coal mine near the mouth.
The aboriginal name for the river was documented as Tahkandik by Lieutenant Frederick Schwatka in 1883 . Spurr from the United States Geological Survey used the spelling "Tahkandit" in 1898. The English name introduced by FC Schrader, also by the USGS, in 1896 is officially used today.
