State Space Agency of Ukraine

The State Space Agency of Ukraine (SSAU; formerly National Space Agency of Ukraine , NSAU; Ukrainian Державне космічне агентство України, Derzhavne kosmichne ahentstvo Ukrayiny, o. ДКАУ, DKAU ) was founded on March 2nd after the fall of the Soviet Union . The background was that a significant part of the Soviet space industry including the design office "Yushnoe" NPO (translated "southern") of the designer Mikhail Kuzmich Jangel were now on Ukrainian territory. This affected both the production of military ( SS-18 Satan ) and civilian rocket technology ( Zenit , Zyklon , Dnepr ) and corresponding spacecraft. National five-year programs have been adopted to maintain existing skills and at the same time convert.

The first from 1993 to 1997 served to maintain the industrial and research capacity of spaceflight-related potentials in the interest of building a national economy and at the same time penetrating the international market for spaceflight services. During this time, some businesses were also switched to typical conversion products such as tractors and consumer goods.

The second, 1998–2002, focused more on the requirements of the international market. Products and services were offered from a single source (including launch complexes, missiles, data provision and system components). Great efforts have been made to integrate Ukraine into the international space community. Behind this is the acquisition of external sources of finance through joint ventures such as " Sea Launch " and the conclusion of contracts with 20 nations or agencies.

The current 2003–2007 program is even more geared towards specific (paying) users. Both the economic / legal conditions (e.g. external sources of finance) and the technological basis are to be improved. High goals are striven for in international cooperation. In doing so, they rely on close relationships with American companies, but also seek the connection to Europe with power. It therefore includes goal-oriented programs to:

  • Scientific space exploration
  • Remote sensing of the earth
  • Satellite communication
  • Development of earth components for navigation and special information systems
  • Spaceflight activities in the interests of national security and defense
  • Space flight complexes (in addition to sea launch, land- or aircraft-based systems)
  • Development of basic elements and advanced space flight technologies
  • Expansion of the research, test and production base of the space flight sector

Work is currently underway on the development of the Zyklon-4 , a light launch vehicle Mayak is being designed, the Zenit is being developed into the Zenit-M and the Dnepr is being developed into the Dnepr-M. After the success of the “Sich-1M” satellite, others (MC-1-TK “Mikrosputnik”; MC-2-8 S “ICH-2”) are in progress.

Until 2014, the NSAU also included the railway tracking and measurement complex in Evpatoria in the Crimea . The industrial cores of the space industry of Ukraine are located in Dnipro , Kiev and Kharkov .
