Roland Kayn

Roland Kayn (born September 3, 1933 in Reutlingen , † January 5, 2011 in Nieuwe Pekela , Groningen province , Netherlands ) was a German organist and composer .

Kayn studied from 1952 to 1956 at the State University of Music in Stuttgart and the church music school in Eßlingen am Neckar . In 1956 he became a master student of Boris Blacher at the State Music Academy in Berlin and attended seminars with Josef Rufer , Fritz Winckel and Oskar Sala . In 1960 he received a scholarship from the Villa Massimo and spent the following years in Rome and Venice . In 1964 he founded the group Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza with Franco Evangelisti , to which the composers Ennio Morricone and Frederic Rzewski also belonged. In 1970 he became an employee of the Goethe Institute in Amsterdam and worked at the Institute for Sonology in Utrecht . From 1999 he lived in seclusion in Nieuwe Pekela near Groningen .

In addition to instrumental works for organ, piano, chamber ensembles and orchestra, Kayn composed mainly electronic, electroacoustic and tape music, which he called cybernetic music . He published much of his work on his Reiger Records label. In addition to Tektra (1980–82), his most important compositions include the 14-hour work A Little Electronic Milky Way of Sound (2009).
