The Azerbaijani National Library ( Azerbaijani Mirzə Fətəli Axundov adına Azərbaycan Milli Kitabxanası ) in Baku is the national library and literary archive of Azerbaijan . It is named after the Azerbaijani writer and philosopher Mirzə Fətəli Axundov .

history

The library was founded in 1922 and opened on May 23, 1923. It was initially called the General Library and State Book Depot of Azerbaijan and was housed in a building that now houses the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan . In 1939 it was named after Mirzə Fətəli Axundov . The current library building in Baku city center was designed by the architect Mikayıl Hüseynov in 1947 and completed in 1959. Its exterior is adorned with statues of poets such as Nezāmi , Mahsati and Alexander Pushkin . National library status was granted to the library in 2004.

Stocks and usage

The library has around 4.5 million media units, including extensive historical holdings and a music department with around 175,000 media units (sheet music, books, magazines and sound carriers). It is the only library that has microfilms and photographs from Azerbaijani newspapers from before the 1920 conquest by the Red Army . The library has 13 reading rooms ; it is a reference library with no home loan.
