The National Library and Archives of Iraq ( Arabic دار الكتب والوثائق العراقـيـة, DMG Dār al-Kutub wa-l-Waṯāʾiq al-ʿIrāqīya ; Engl .: National Library and Archives of Iraq , today also: Iraqi National Library and Archives , abbreviated: INLA ) is the national library of the Republic of Iraq , based in Baghdad . It was founded in 1920.
The library fell victim to the flames on April 13, 2003 during the Third Gulf War . The initially assumed loss of valuable manuscripts and other historical documents from the time of the Ottoman Empire has not come true later. Only recent archival documents from Saddam Hussein's reign were destroyed . The destruction was caused by arson. Which military unit of Iraq or the Allies was responsible for this remained unclear.
