National Action Forum for Diabetes Mellitus

The National Action Forum Diabetes Mellitus , NAFDM for short, is a supra-regional cooperation association founded in 2004 in the field of diabetology and related fields with the legal form of a non-profit GmbH . The NAFDM is coordinated by the German Diabetes Union and financially supported by the Federal Ministry of Health and the Aventis Foundation.

This network includes representatives from numerous key organs and organizations, for example from ministries, health insurance companies, scientific institutes and professional societies, self-help groups and professional medical organizations, non-medical advisory and treatment organizations, political parties, industry and the media .

The organizational structure is divided into a coordination unit (office in Munich) and the three project groups prevention (Munich / Dresden), care (Düsseldorf) and research (Tübingen / Nuthetal).

aims

The goals of the NAFDM are to stop the feared increase in new diseases within the framework of preventive measures, to improve the care of those already affected from an economic point of view and to carry out research (experimental, clinical and care research) in the field of metabolic diseases , in particular the metabolic syndrome and the Support and network type 1 diabetes .

activities

The activities are based on the process Gesundheitsziel.de. Here, working group 4 defined the most important health goals for the topic of diabetes mellitus. Activities previously initiated by the NAFDM include:

  • The development of a national diabetes mellitus action plan on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Health.
  • Supporting and promoting the creation, updating and implementation of the diabetes guidelines of the German Diabetes Society
  • Award of a seal of approval by a recognized expert procedure.
  • Establishment of a project database in order to record current or planned projects and measures in the field of diabetes mellitus in Germany and thus to provide an overview of activities, actors and their work results.
  • Publication of a "Guide to Prevention of Diabetes Mellitus Type 2", which is intended to give providers of preventive measures assistance in the development of prevention programs and their practical implementation.
  • Development and implementation of a “National Prevention Management Concept Diabetes Mellitus Type 2” in cooperation with the German Diabetes Foundation and the working group “Prevention of Diabetes Mellitus Type 2” of the German Diabetes Society.
  • Improvement of the care of people with diabetes in order to recognize diabetes in its complex, serious complications at an early stage and to guarantee or create the best possible care and support under strict economic aspects.
  • Questionnaire campaign “What do you know about diabetes?” To show the current state of information of the population in Germany about type 2 diabetes mellitus.
  • Research funding in the area of ​​diabetes risk prediction, gestational diabetes and biomarkers.
