The National Gallery Bangkok ( Thai : พิพิธภัณฑสถาน แห่ง ชาติ หอ ศิลป์ , English "The National Gallery") is the national art gallery of Thailand .

location

The Bangkok National Gallery is located at the north end of Sanam Luang across from the Bangkok National Theater . It is located on Thanon Chao Fa (Prince Street) in the Phra Nakhon ( Khet ) district of Bangkok .

history

The current building of the National Gallery was built during the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) as a mint , which until then was housed in a building in the Grand Palace . The new building was opened on February 4, 1902 in the presence of the king.

The mint was built in a western architectural style from bricks with a gable roof . The architect is said to have oriented himself on a factory building in Birmingham . The building has two wings and an inner courtyard, and is unusually rich in decorations for a factory building. It was registered as a National Monument on September 19, 1978.

When the Royal Mint was moved to Thanon Pradipat (Pradipat Street) in 1974 , the Thai Fine Arts Department received the right of use. After a renovation, it was converted into the National Gallery, which was ceremoniously opened on August 8, 1977 on the occasion of Queen Sirikit's birthday by Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn .
