Setup date 1984

The Cerro Hoya National Park (Parque Nacional Cerro Hoya o Tres Cerros) is a national park in the Panamanian provinces of Veraguas and Los Santos . The park comprises a mountain range at the southernmost point of the Azuero peninsula. Of the park's 333.42 square kilometers, 20 percent is in the sea.

The park was created with one of the first designation initiatives in Panama in 1984. Today it is one of 15 national parks in Panama and is administered by the Panamanian environmental authority Autoridad Nacional del Ambiente (ANAM) as part of the national protected area system Sistema Nacional de Áreas Protegidas (SINAP).

From 1994 to 2004 the German GTZ carried out a bilateral project to strengthen the protection goals while at the same time improving the living conditions of the local population.

Geography and geology

The park is located about 350 km southeast of Panama City on the Azuero peninsula. In the park, people live in around 25 settlements of different sizes. The park is only connected to a road at the western end to Restingue. All other parts can be reached on foot, by horse or by boat. The national park can also be reached by sea: the ports are Los Bozos and Restingue in Montijo .

climate

On the coast, the average temperature is around 26 ° C and the annual rainfall is 2000 mm. On the peaks of the mountains, the temperature averages 20 ° C, with an average rainfall of 4000 mm.

geology

The origin of the mountains is volcanic.

Ten rivers flow into the stretch of coast that belongs to the park. The island of Restingue is off the coast. Cerro Hoya National Park is home to the highest peaks of the southern end of the long isolated mountain range that stretches west along the Azuero Peninsula. The park includes the stretch of coast between the Restingue and Ventana rivers. The summit of Mount Cerro Hoyas is 1559 meters high, the two neighboring peaks are 1534 m and 1478 m high.

The ocelot (Leopardus pardalis) occurs in Panamanian forests. Like other cats, bears and the forerunners of the lamas, he migrated over the isthmus of Panama from North America to South America.

fauna

The mammalia ocelot ( Leopardus pardalis ), various species of monkeys and jaguars are characteristic flagship species . Over 150 species of birds and around 50 species of fish have been recorded in the national park.

flora

Except for the coastal sections, the park is forested with tropical rainforest . Over 30 endemic plant species have been described in Cerro Hoya . So far , a species of Guzmania has only been found here, in a damp forest in the summit area of Cerro Hoya at an altitude of about 1400 meters. The last remaining oak forest in Central America can be found in the park.
