The Defensores del Chaco National Park is located in the north of the Alto Paraguay Department in Paraguay near the border with Bolivia . It was founded on August 6, 1975 and had an area of ​​7800 km² (currently 7197 km²). It is the largest national park in Paraguay. It consists of a plain from which the mountain range Cerro León protrudes with a height of 624 m.

The area is characterized by long periods of drought; When it rains in the months between October and April, the rivers burst their banks and create flood plains, some of them permanent. The annual rainfall varies between 500 and 800 mm. Temperatures can rise to 42 ° C in summer.

The still uncontacted Ayoreo people live in the forests of the national park .

The national park is 830 km from Asunción and can be reached via a junction from the Ruta Transchaco , but not passable with normal cars. It should not be explored without a guide. In May 2018, an Austrian tourist went missing in the national park and was not found even after a 25-day search.
