Quirimbas National Park

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Quirimbas National Park is one of six national parks in Mozambique . It is located in the province of Cabo Delgado in the north of Mozambique and covers an area of 7506 km². The park extends over the districts of Ibo , Quissanga , Pemba-Metuge , Macomia , Meluco and Ancuabe . The most important part of the national park are the eleven southernmost islands of the Quirimbas archipelago in the Indian Ocean , which gave the park its name. Marine habitats make up 1522 km² of the total area of the park, the much larger part of the national park, 5984 km², is on the mainland.

The national park was established by decree of the Mozambique Ministry of Tourism on June 6, 2002. Its designation came about with significant support from the World Wide Fund for Nature ( WWF ), which is still heavily involved in the management of the park.

At least 50,000 people live in villages scattered across the area of the park, whereby the relevant Mozambican law in national parks prohibits all human activities such as agriculture , hunting , fishing etc. Nevertheless, the management plan assumes that people live in the area of the national park and makes various proposals for the compatibility of human settlements and subsistence farming on the one hand and nature conservation and tourism on the other. As in other national parks around the world, however, the population living in the area of the park suffers from the so-called “human - wild animals” conflict. The greatest conflicts arise with elephants , who destroy fields and wells and are also responsible for human deaths.
