The U Minh Thượng National Park ( Vietnamese Vườn quốc gia U Minh Thượng ) is located in the southern Mekong Delta in Vietnam , in the province of Kiên Giang . The area covers 8053 hectares. Due to the high sulphate content of the soil, the area is dominated by peat swamp forests . The dominant tree species is Melaleuca cajuputi . The U Minh National Park consists of a mosaic of forest fragments separated by rice fields and canals.

Many rare and endemic species are found in the national park. 226 vascular plants have been discovered so far. 187 species of birds, rare otters , flying foxes , squirrels , large-spotted civets ( Viverra megaspila ), Malay pangolins ( Manis javanica ) and reticulated pythons ( Python reticulatus ) live in the reserve.

Due to the second Indochina War (including Agent Orange ) and the current strong population pressure from outside, the forests are and will be severely damaged. So are z. B. by honey collectors on April 26, 2002 large parts were destroyed by fire.
