The Hansybach natural monument, also known as Hörmbach or Hirmbach , is a small stream reserve in Bad Vöslau in Lower Austria, in which three species of water snails are to be protected. This natural monument is one of 13 in the municipality. It is located on land owned by the municipality and has been generously renovated by the municipality. In 1979 the natural monument was supplemented by an information pavilion.

The water snails living here have survived since the Tertiary and are nowhere else in the world except in the nearby thermal baths. They live in the natural monument in a small stream, which is kept at a constant temperature of around 24 ° C all year round by a thermal spring .

Due to the consistently warm water, the stream was used as a laundry pool until the 20th century, when there were no washing machines . However, since the stream has a relatively high flow speed with a water flow of 20 l / s, the snails were not affected by the detergent contamination. The snail species living here were discovered by the head of the mollusc collection in the Natural History Museum in Vienna, Oliver E. Paget , who also suggested protecting the species.

In the further course the Hansybach also crosses under the Wiener Neustädter Canal and the Thermenradweg in the east of Bad Vöslau and flows into the Schwechat in Tribuswinkel .

The unique reserve, which has so far mainly been used scientifically, is to be used more for tourism in the future.

Snail species

  • Thermen dwarf spring snail ( Bythinella parreyssii ): It has a length of 0.8 mm and a diameter of 0.5 mm. You can only recognize it by sifting the fine sand found in the stream. It only occurs in Bad Vöslau.
  • Thermal bath snail ( Theodoxus prevostianus ): With a length of 5 mm and 7 mm width, it can only live in the warm drains of thermal springs from 70 million to 600,000 years ago.
