The thermal pitch snail ( Esperiana daudebartii , Syn . : Microcolpia daudebartii ) is a freshwater snail up to 2.5 cm long , native to Southeast Europe , that lives in rivers , lakes and thermal springs and feeds on microscopic algae .

features

The right-hand wound, slim, pointed, conical, shiny casing with very fine growth stripes is about 1.0 cm to 2.5 cm long and about 4 mm to 8 mm wide in the adult animal. It then has about seven to eight almost flat whorls and no navel. The spindle abruptly merges into the rounded lower edge of the case, where there is usually a slight groove. The housing is colored dark red-brown to black-violet. The horny operculum is half as long as the case. The snail itself is usually gray-brown with a darker pattern, has a short base and pointed antennae.

Occurrence, way of life and distribution

The thermal bath pitch snail lives in rivers and streams on stone, wood or mud. It prefers water depths of about 80 cm and goes down to depths of 2 m when it is very cold. It needs at least 12 mg O 2 / l . Their distribution area includes southeast Europe from the Black Sea to Slovakia and eastern Austria . Here it can be found particularly in the Hansybach and the thermal spring of Bad Vöslau in Lower Austria . In Ukraine , it is threatened by habitat destruction.

Subspecies

Esperiana daudebartii acicularis

A distinction is made between three subspecies: Esperiana daudebartii daudebartii ( Prevost , 1821) occurs in Austria in thermal springs such as in the Hansybach near Bad Vöslau , while Esperiana daudebartii acicularis ( Férussac , 1823) in the Danube in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg and Schönau an der Danube is to be found. Esperiana daudebartii thermalis (Bread, 1861), on the other hand, occurs in thermal springs in the Bükk Mountains in Hungary .
