Natural History Museum Erfurt
The Natural History Museum Erfurt is a natural history museum in the Thuringian state capital Erfurt . It is located in the city center in a building that used to be a warehouse.
Collections and exhibitions
In addition to the permanent exhibition on the subjects of forest , field , city and geological history , changing special exhibitions are also shown.
In the atrium of the museum there is a 350 year old pedunculate oak ( Quercus robur ), the roots of which can be seen on the ground floor and the crown of which protrudes to the top floor. This tree is 14 meters high and has a maximum trunk diameter of about one meter. The specimen was felled in 1991 in the Erfurt city forest.
In a vaulted cellar under the storage building, parts of the 6500 mineral collection of Godehard Schwethelm (1899–1992) are presented. A special attraction is the subsequent recreation of Noah's Ark : numerous animals are placed in a swaying hull. This presentation is intended to draw attention to the global threat to species diversity ( biodiversity ).
The botanical, zoological, mineralogical and palaeontological collections are fed by private donations and independent research.
